Hoyer Recognizes District's Outstanding Student Artists

High school students residing within Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District who participated in the 2011 Congressional Arts Competition were recognized Friday, July 22 by House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer [D-MD -5]. A reception for the participants was held at the CalvART Gallery in the Prince Frederick Shopping Center. Hoyer handed out certificates and posed for pictures with the students who attended the reception.
Special recognition was given to Louis Fratino of Southern High School, was the Fifth Congressional District’s competition. Fratino’s work will be on display in the main corridor connecting the House of Representatives’ office buildings with the U.S. Capitol. The corridor is a walkway through which millions of visitors to the Capitol building travel each year.
A panel comprised of members of the Fifth District arts community—including art teachers and professional artist—reviewed the artworks submitted by the students and selected one piece to represent the district. Fratino’s winning entry will be on display for the next 12 months.
