Three Vehicle Accident Backs Up Traffic in Dunkirk

On Thursday, Dec. 9, at approximately 6:15 a.m., the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad responded to a reported auto accident with multiple vehicles involved along northbound Route 4 and Chaney Road in Dunkirk.

When units arrived they discovered that there was a three-car accident with injuries. One crash victim was treated on the scene and transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital.

The fire equipment cleared the scene around 6:45 a.m., but police still needed to deal with vehicle removal and other duties. The backup impacted morning rush for a while until everything was cleared.

Thanks for making everybody late to work.. Learn how to drive, stop following so closely . Move your cars out of the road . Be considerate .

Aggressive driving and oversaturation has been the norm for Route 4 for at least five years now, coupled with Z-E-R-O police presence from Dunkirk town center to the DC line. There are people out there who would do 120mph to work if they could, we've all seen them.

A big problem is a lot of people 'traveling' in the left lane doing 4mph over 55 and refusing to yield to the right for faster traffic. There's also something to be said for actually just letting of the gas - crazy concept, I know - to slow down, instead of having to flash your brake lights every 10 seconds to everyone behind you.

Trying not to tailgate doesn't work too well because if you leave a 50 foot span from yourself to the next car, four people will dive into your lane and fill the void.

Not many answers in this I know, just observations. Hope the people involved are ok!

Well...
No reason to speed to get to work if you leave on time !!!...55 is 55 no mater what lane your in...the law says slower traffic keep to the right-- meaning below 55.
Anyone remember police doing rolling roadblocks of the1970-80s some say they were ineffective and very dangerous.
I'm not saying that speed was a factor in this specific accident.
This is just another reason why tailgating is so dangerous. If you can't see whats going on in front of the car your following, then clearly your too close, and yes I know people side into your buffer zone- cut people off, lane change in and out up the road etc. Tail gating a large truck-- even worse. Part of the answer is called taking personnal responsibility for how we operate our vehicles. The police can't be every where
but we do need more public presence of patrol officers not to mention stricter fines and punishment for those who see fit to BREAK THE DRIVING LAWS!

JUST A THOUGHT:I question wether some the bad drivers are a result of drivers ed being taken out of public schools and being out sourced commercially.
Lastly ... presure your sherrif and state representatives to force public responsibility.
I truely hope that all involved will recover and learn from their experience.

On your second to last sentence - "presure your sherrif and state representatives to force public responsibility." - we can't do that. Isn't ignoring our public responsibilities and expecting the state to care for us what a welfare state is all about?
