County Weathers Recent Snow Storm

Printer friendly

Winter came early; Charles County was hit with blizzard conditions that were recorded as the largest snow fall ever in the month of December, and the 6th largest in history.

From Friday, Dec 18 through Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, County forces worked diligently to make all roads passable for residents and holiday travelers.  The storm officially ended Monday afternoon, Dec. 21 when temperatures rose above freezing.  Snow fall accumulations ranged from 18-22 inches.

The Charles County Department of Public Facilities had 63 County staff working with 50 pieces of County snow equipment, and 135 Contractors working around the clock through Monday evening.  Approximately 3,000 tons of Solar Salt was applied to fight the hard packed snow and ice that remained due to the below freezing temperatures. The County maintains over 2,000 roads and has 285 Subdivisions to navigate snow plows through.

Charles County is in the process of seeking reimbursements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Stafford Act to help offset the cost of the storm.
