Girl Sexually Assaulted as She Slept at Party

On Oct. 30, Troopers from the Maryland State Police responded to a residence in Hollywood for the report of a Rape. 

Detectives from the Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.  The 20-year-old female victim advised she was at a party when Mark Thomas Powell, 29 of Hollywood, attempted to have a sexual liaison with the victim.  The victim refused and fell asleep but awoke to find Powell sexually assaulting her. 

Powell was placed under arrest, charged with fourth-degree sex offense and incarcerated in the Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

I am glad these things are taken seriously now. When I was in my teens and early twenties, no one wanted to anything about creeps like this taking advantage of girls and ignoring the meaning of NO. Apparently is was considered their perogative.

Both were wrong
No means no, but maybe the inexperienced young girl also learned a basic lesson about losing her sensibilities / cognizance at a party where alcohol (and probably more) was being used. Never put yourself in a situation, EVER, where you need to rely on anyone to babysit you, or you might wake up in a compromising position. Daddy should have taught her that in grade school.

It is disgusting to read that someone can really blame a victim of sexual assault for being assaulted. I am not saying that I know for a fact but nowhere in the article is it stated that alcohol was being used by either party and you do know what you get when you ass-u-me, don't you?

The girl could have made better decisions, agreed, but to say both were at fault because a grown man sexually assaulted her while she slept is disgusting and wrong. Nobody should be violated by another individual at any point at any time. Period. Do you believe that a spouse can commit adultery under certain circumstances too? Ignorance is one of the main problems in this area, thanks for dousing it in bright yellow highlighter ink!

I agree with wardog, this girl was in the wrong and should know better to sleep some place with a bunch of guys in the first place. No, it did not say it had alcohol there but anybody can guess that it obviously did. Sure the guy should know much better than committing a crime like that but hell it's her fault too. That's why you shouldn't be drinking at the age of 20 anyways.

You've got to be kidding. Who says alcohol was involved and whether she passed out or just fell asleep doesn't give anyone the right to be violated. I've been to plenty of parties at friends houses and not drank and gone to sleep - guess it would serve me right if I was a victim of sexual assault for falling asleep....

If she did drink, it's legal. If she fell asleep after having some drinks, it's legal. It's also more responsible than getting in her car. All of this is irrelevant anyway.

She told this guy no. He waited till she fell asleep. He is a predator and a pervert.

It doesn't matter if there was alcohol or not at the party...the girl could have been on PCP for goodness sake, but that still doesn't excuse the behavior of that pervert.

Actually the girl is 20. So, it was not legal.
