Maryland State Fire Marshalls and the Charles County Sheriff's Office had a busy afternoon Monday, Oct. 19 after a suspicious package was found in the parking lot of the Giant Food Store located at 3297 Crain Highway in Waldorf.

Investigation revealed a cylindrical device was found in a shopping cart at the Giant Food Store parking lot. The device emitted a suspicious odor and drew concerns from store management. Area HAZMAT teams arrived and evaluated the device before requesting assistance from the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad. State Bomb Technicians X-Ray’d the device and used a robot to render it safe.

The device turned out to be an abandoned thermos and posed no real threat.

No injuries were reported.
