On Sunday, Oct. 4, Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad held an open house to kick off Fire Prevention Week. The event which took place between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. had something for everyone. There were demonstrations and training, fun activities and plenty of good food.

Joined by Ridge Volunteer Firefighters and EMTs, the open house provided demonstrations on car fires, extraction techniques, CPR and rescue breathing, and provided a number of opportunities for children and parents alike to learn how to put out a fire, practice ‘stop, drop and roll’ for burn prevention and more.

The children also enjoyed the moon bounce, face painting while parents learned about hazardous materials toured some very interesting fire, rescue and police equipment. Representatives were at the open house from St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office who will be holding its own open house on Oct. 17 in Leonardtown.
