Officers Identified in Officer Involved Shooting

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has identified three officers who were involved in an incident that led to a shooting on Oct. 2 in Pisgah. The officers, PFC. Stephen Miller, 39, a three-year veteran, PFC. Eric Leukhardt, 35, an eleven-year veteran, and Cpl. John Freeman, 36, a ten-year veteran, are on administrative leave in accordance with Agency policy.

Although the autopsy results are not final, the investigation has revealed that two of the three officers discharged their firearms and a total of eleven shots were fired. The investigation is on-going. 
 


UPDATE: The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect in the assault which led to an officer-involved shooting on Oct. 2 in Pisgah as Cornelius Maurice Warren, 44 of Indian Head.

The investigation is continuing and no further details are available at this time. 


OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE:

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting involving two Charles County Sheriff’s Officers.

On Oct. 2 at 3:25 p.m., officers initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Nelson Point Road and Mason Springs Road in Pisgah. During the course of the stop, officers developed information that drugs were inside the vehicle. The driver and passenger were asked to exit the car at which point officers observed a large quantity of marijuana inside the vehicle. At that point, one of the suspects jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to flee. A struggle ensued between the suspect and officers during which the suspect attempted to grab one officer’s handgun. Both officers discharged their firearms striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he died a short time later.

In accordance with Agency policy, both officers were placed on administrative leave.

The suspect’s identity will be released once he has been positively identified. The investigation is ongoing.

 


Charles County Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer involved shooting that has left one suspect dead.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Charles County Sheriff Deputy initiated a routine traffic stop near the intersection of Mason Springs Road and Nelson Point Road in Pisgah around 3:25 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. 

During the course of the traffic stop, the officer discovered drugs in the vehicle and called for another officer to assist. The driver of the suspect vehicle, put the car in gear and attempted to flee.  An assisting officer on foot attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect then attempted to accelerate and turned into a dirt roadway about 50 yards from the original traffic stop. A struggle ensued between the officer and the suspect. The suspect was able to get ahold of the officers handgun. The assisting officer then discharged his firearm striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to Civista Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

According to Charles County Police Spokesperson Diane Richardson, the investigation is still in the preliminary stage, officers are still processing the scene.
