On Friday, August 28, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-D) is in the area to participate in two Charles County events and two events in St. Mary’s. Hoyer’s first stop this morning was at the Melwood ADA Celebration and Tree Dedication at 10:30 a.m.
At that event, Hoyer spoke to the Melwood American with Disabilities Act Celebration attendees. The congressman spoke as one of the original authors of the ADA and ADA Amendments Act signed into law last year. During that speech, Hoyer paid a special tribute to Sen. Edward Kennedy. Melwood is an organization serving more than 2,000 persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the National Capital region.
The next stop on his whirlwind tour was at the Seventh Annual Women’s Equality Day Networking Fair and Luncheon at Middleton Hall in Waldorf. Congressman Hoyer will act as host at the event with women community and business leaders from across Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District. The theme of this year’s luncheon is “The Faces of Women in Need” and will feature remarks by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.
The event is held in recognition of Women’s Equality Day; observed on August 26 commemorating the 1920 passage of the ratification of the nineteenth amendment giving women the right to vote. The event is intended to recognize the valuable role women play in our region and provides attendees with an opportunity to network with other women professionals.
Next up for the Congressman is at the intersection of Coral and Great Mills Roads in Lexington Park at 3 p.m. this afternoon where Hoyer will attend a groundbreaking ceremony to launch a streetscape improvement project to reconstruct a frequently used stretch of Great Mills Road from Coral Drive to the entrance of St. Mary’s Square.
The improvements will make Great Mills Road, which serves as a main thoroughfare for Patuxent River Naval Air Station and its 22,000 employees, safer and more attractive for drivers, pedestrians and businesses. Rep. Hoyer helped to secure federal funding as part of a multi-jurisdictional effort to fund the project.
Hoyer’s final stop for the day is to recognize an employee at the Lexington Park Post Office located at 21745 South Coral Drive. At the 4 p.m. ceremony, Hoyer will visit the Lexington Park Post Office to recognize long-time post office employee, Mazerine Wingate. The recognition comes three weeks before Wingate turns 99 years old.
