First Day of School, First Bus Accident

On this first day of school, St. Mary's County suffered its first bus accident of the year. Bus 31 serving Kings Christan Academy and traveling empty on Park Hall Road near Route 235 was run off the road by another vehicle and crashed into a pole. No children were on board and the bus driver was reported as being unharmed.

The bus was able to maneuver back onto the roadway and is now awaiting the arrival of police. Motorists are strongly cautioned to pay careful attention to the new traffic patterns created by school buses moving across the county in order to avoid similar accidents and to keep St. Mary's County School Children safe.

Bus Accident Already? =(
People really need to be more cautious when driving! Last year my daughters bus was hit by another vehicle. Luckily no one was hurt. I don't want to have to constantly worry about my childs safety! Sometimes I think it would be safer just to drive her to school everyday. Glad no one was on this bus! And I am glad no one was hurt!

That didn't take long
You're absolutely right that driver's need to be more cautious, CrystalM1999. And that goes for the bus drivers, also! I paced a bus coming through Wildewood this morning (bus 530) at 42MPH in a 30MPH zone. Yes, I am guilty too, but I wanted to see just how fast they were going. Could call the transportation department but they say it is not their responsibility; have to call the bus owner. That's BS!

You can call the Bd of Ed and they will make contact with the driver and the owner. I did this last year and saw changes in how the bus I complained about was operated. If you don't call and complain then you are just as guilty of putting our children at risk.

Almost every bus driver in Essex South is dyslexic. The sign say 25 MPH all streets but they all try to go 52 MPH. And watch yourself on the corners ... they cut them short and drive on the wrong side of the road - this is WITH the kids on the bus.

Nothing gets changed when you complain - this has been going on for years. It probably won't stop until somebody is killed. Then I get to testify in court about the way these drivers have treating the neighborhood. Unless it's my kid, then I will be the one on trial.

There are two buses that travel on Wildewood parkway that go WAY over the speed limit. I know they set up radar on that road, so they need to stop the buses as well as the cars. As many pedestrians as there are on that road, it cant possibly be safe for a bus to speed down it.

Drunk bus drivers
I dont know if that bus driver was drunk or anything but I know I just graduated a couple years ago and I had at lease 2 or 3 bus drivers that drove drunk! I remember one I had in elementary school was so drunk he was arguing with the students telling us that theres no such thing of ORANGE JUICE! These bus drivers needs random drug and alcohol checks or something its crazy and sad that parents have to constantly worry about their kids saftey while on the bus. I was so glad that I was able to walk when I got into high school.

Running red light
One morning, last year I witnessed a bus running a red light @ Chancellors Run/Maple Rd & 235. I had my 2 children in the car with me and we watched in horror as our light was green and she was flying across the intersection on a RED light. She was the last one to cross the road...later that morning, I sent an email to Jeffrey Thompson complaining about her and received a prompt returned PHONE call from him. He heard out and promised to follow it up with me. He sure enough did. The next day I received another phone call from him, thanking me again for contacting me. He had spoken with the driver who defended herself and said she had NOT run the red light. At any rate, he did reprimand her for the action.

Anyone who sees a school bus doing something stupid, ie: running red lights, driving off the road, speeding, weaving or not waiting for students to be safely off the road or seated down before pulling away should contact the Transportation Dept. I assure you, Jeff will call you immediately for the report. Bus drivers report unsafe drivers they feel are endangering them and/or the students. Don't stand by and let bad drivers get away with stupid behavior. That taints the good drivers and they don't like it!

Bus gets run off road by another vehicle, and ya'll twist it around and make it a sounding board against Bus Drivers. A girl was hit this year by a car while waiting on a school bus...any commnets??? Nope, not a one.

Absolutely pathetic.
