What started in February as a way for members of the Patuxent River Assembly of God in California to learn to sew has become a project of mercy and need.

In the beginning, Molly Frink wanted to teach members how to sew. Frink began a sewing class at the church on Tuesdays but decided that the class should learn while creating something that could be used by those in need.

“I called the U.S headquarters for an orphanage I know in Guatemala and was directed to the school in Kenya that desperately needed help,” said Frink in a recent interview with TheBAYNET.com.

Armed with a worthwhile project, Frink and her six or so sewing students contacted the school in Kenya and learned that they were in dire need of uniforms for their children.

“When I first learned of the need for uniforms I thought it was odd,” said Frink. “They told me that the child stealing was so much of a problem there, that uniforms made it easier to identify their children to prevent stealing.”

With that knowledge, Frink’s class worked diligently creating 120 tote bags and 20 uniforms. Those uniforms will be delivered to the St. Lazarus School in the Kibera Slum in Nairobi, Kenya on Friday, August 14.

“[The school] has about 150 students and is as much in need of electricity and clean water as it is for supplies for the school,” said Frink.

PRAG and Frink intend to start again on Tuesday, Sept. 15 with a new sewing class and Frink is looking for another worthwhile project for the sewing class to produce its wear.
