National Night Out Set to Continue the Tradition Tonight

National Night or as some call it, America’s night out against crime, is on again for tonight, August 4 with communities participating across St. Mary’s County. The annual event was begun in early 1984 when the National Association of Town Watch Executive Director, Matt Peskin decided that communities needed a vehicle to get more involved in neighborhood watches around the country.

In that first year, some 400 communities participated in 23 states. Last year, National Night Out saw 35.4 million people in more than 11,000 communities in all 50 states participate in the single night of crime prevention awareness.

The following is a list of communites participating in St. Mary’s County for tonight’s National Night Out:

In the north:

  • Country Lakes Homeowners Association – event held at the Pavillion at Cox Drive and Asher Road from 7 to 10 p.m.
  • Longview Beach – At the Clubhouse from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
  • Persimmon Hills -  Corner of Steeple Drive from 6 to 10 p.m.
  • St. Joseph’s Community Center – At the Community Center on Kavanagh Road from 6 to 10 p.m.
  • Leonardtown Village – Park area of Complex from 7 to 10 p.m.
  • Holland Forrest Landing – At the McIntosh Road Hollywood Head Start/Community Center from 6 to 9 p.m.


In the South

  • Hickory Nut Subdivision of Wildewood –  At the Playground at Hickory Nut and Poplar Wood starting at 6 p.m.
  • Birch Way of Wildewood – Cul-de-sac of Birch Way starting at 6 p.m.
  • Riverside Farms – Park area at 46132 Access Drive starting at 6:30 p.m.
  • Woodland Acres – Oak Drive and dead end from 6 to 9 p.m.
  • Town Creek – Town Creek Pool area beginning at 6 p.m.
  • Lexwood Drive – Gateways/Jarboe Center starting at 6 p.m.
  • South Essex Community – Corner of Scarborough and Planters Court starting at 5:30 p.m.
  • Cherry Cove Land Development – Cherry Cove Office on Great Mills Road beginning at 6 p.m.
  • Lexington Village – Playground area starting at 6 p.m.
  • Westbury Community – Westbury Clubhouse starting at 6 p.m.
  • Meadow Lake Community – Community Pavilion beginning at 6 p.m.
  • Beechwood Estates starting at 6 pm.
  • South Hampton – Lincoln Avenue in Lexington Park starting at 7 p.m.


Calvert National Night Out Locations

  • White Sands – Corner of White Sands Drive and Sycamore Road from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • North Beach from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Chesapeake Ranch Estates from 6 to 8 p.m.
