On July 31, beginning at 7 p.m. Bowles Farms once again hosts the Annual St. Mary’s County National Lawn Mower Racing event. In tonight’s contest, lawnmower racers from across the country come to compete for a chance to earn points to the national finals.

Each year the races are hotly contested and wildly cheered by area fans, all amazed at the speeds attained by men and women on lawn mowers. At this year’s event, which concludes on Saturday, August 1, much celebrated racing celebrity, Bobby Cleveland – The Engine Answer Man, is making an appearance. Cleveland set the record for the fastest lawnmower achieving 80.792 miles per hour.

The event is a great two days of family fun, activity and outdoor entertainment. In addition to the actual racing there will be children's rides, moon bounce, a kiddy tractor pull, a John Deere toy display, K-9 demonstrations, pony rides, face painting and antique tractors on display.

On Friday, the schedule is planned for test runs to start at 6 p.m. with racing to commence at 7 p.m. The gates to Bowles Farm in Clements will open today at 5 p.m.

For Saturday’s finale, the gates will open at 2 p.m. There is a horse pull at 3 p.m. and the test runs begin at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., the final heats of racing begin ending with this year’s champion lawnmower racing being cheered by hundreds of fans.

The great event is also one of the most affordable family activities anywhere. The price of admission is only $8 for adults. Children eight and under are free. All proceeds from the event go to the benefit of the Seventh District Rescue Squad and Seventh District Optimist Club.
