Each summer, St. Mary’s Hospital invites local high school and college students to gain hands-on experience in a busy health care environment. This year, 13 high school and four college students are participating in the paid eight-week internship.

For college students Dana Daniel and Anna Winship, the summer internship is a way to gain experience in the health care field, which they both want to enter after college.  Daniel, a senior at the University of Maryland University College, is earning her pre-medical certificate.  She hopes to attend medical school and study cardiology.

“I wanted a deeper insight into how a hospital works,” Daniel said.

Winship is a psychology major at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and plans on attending nursing school with the eventual goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

“St. Mary's Hospital’s Student Intern program allows local students the opportunity to gain real work experience, learn transferable skills, and grow personally and professionally toward a health care career,” said Marcia Chase, Human Resources generalist II.

More than 100 high school students and 75 college students applied for a summer internship.  For more information about the hospital’s internship program, contact Chase at (301) 475-7101.
