The crowds made their way to the Townhouse Green at St. Mary's College of Maryland June 19, to see the opening of the River Concert Series and to Celebrate Maryland's 375 years. Bringing blankets and chairs, concert goers picked their spot for the evening of music and Maryland pride. The eleventh year of RCS debuted a performance of "Terrae Mariae: A Creation Story" to celebrate the founding and growth of Maryland with original music by composer Nathan Lincoln-DeCusatis and words by SMCM English professor Jennifer Cognard-Black. In coming weeks, more guest performers will grace the stage as the series continues to bring a variety of musical entertainment to SMCM every Friday night throughout the summer. The College's Arts Alliance is joined by state, corporate and individual sponsors to bring the RCS to the public, free of charge. Vendors sold eats, treats and various wares making an evening on the Townhouse Green a relaxing delight. Many families were on hand, bringing the experience of an outdoor concert to the ears of their little ones. Several couples could be found enjoying a romantic evening, with glasses of wine and beautiful music under the warm June sky. Music lovers of all ages sat contently listening, while others used the time to talk with friends and family. Several people in attendance said this is something they've come to look forward to all year and come often for the fantastic and free Friday night entertainment. The music series promises to delight those who come out to enjoy the show. Check out http://www.smcm.edu/rcs/ for information on upcoming performances. |
