Coast Guard Rescues 6 in Chesapeake Bay
CHESAPEAKE BAY - 6/22/2009
|
The Coast Guard rescued six people that were stranded on a disabled vessel in the Chesapeake Bay near the Bay Bridge Sunday. Coast Guard Sector Baltimore watchstanders received a distress call from Edward Jones of Landover, the owner/operator of a 19-foot pleasure craft, via marine-band radio at 7:30 p.m. A 41-foot utility boat crew from Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay, Md., a 25-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Annapolis, and a Maryland State Police rescue helicopter were all dispatched. A boat crew from Station Annapolis arrived on scene and located the disabled boat at 10:14 p.m. The crew then towed the boat and crew back to the station. "We were able to use a line of bearing from the Rescue 21 system to give us a general search area which aided in locating the distressed vessel," said Petty Officer 1st Class James Morrison, a search and rescue coordinator at Sector Baltimore. There were no reports of injuries. The Coast Guard urges mariners to outfit their boat with a functioning marine-band radio, using channel 16 on a marine-band radio is the most reliable way to communicate a distress to search and rescue personnel in the event of an emergency while on the water.
