The Maryland Transportation Authority  plans to reopen both lanes of the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge on U.S. 301 connecting Newburg with King George County, Va., this morning, Monday, June 15 at 5 a.m.  The authority had closed one lane to traffic temporarily from 8 p.m. Saturday, June 13, until 5 a.m. Monday, June 15.

Crews moved and reset concrete barriers and were able to perform line striping as part of Phase 2 of the toll plaza improvement project.

As the project continues, the authority asked motorists to:

Consider alternate routes – Significant delays are anticipated during flagging operations for alternating traffic.

Slow down – The speed limit on the bridge is 50 mph. The suggested speed for trucks of three or more axles is 35 mph.

Be courteous – Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.

Pay attention to work zone signs and equipment – Obey flaggers who are directing traffic.

Avoid distracted driving – Devote your full attention to the road.

The $5.6 million project began in November 2008 and includes:

Realigning the northbound and southbound approaches to the toll plaza area, including reconstructing and widening the concrete roadway and reconstructing the approaches' shoulders, barrier and median (from 1/4 mile prior to the bridge).

Replacing and upgrading tollbooths and safety features at the toll plaza.

Improving signs at the facility.

The project is slated for completion in summer 2010.
