Local Creative Talent Showcased at Three Notch Theatre

TheBAYNET.com had the privilege of a sneak peak for the "Week of One Acts" at Three Notch Theatre Thursday, May 21. The Newtowne Players will be presenting five original, one act plays June 4 through June 7. All of the scripts are the creative works of local authors and are produced, directed, and acted by local talents as well. The hard work is evident, even as costumes are still being sewn and the details are hammered out with the stage lights on.
The five plays offer something for everyone, from the light-hearted comedy to the cutting edge drama. Thomas Esposito's "Rapture in Flight" will amuse the theater buff and the aviation enthusiast alike. "Babu's Burgers", the second one-act penned by Keith Williams, is a humorous mesh up of history and Hollywood. Andrea Hein's debut, "The Wake", takes a not so somber look at death and family, injecting some wry humor into the passing of a wealthy uncle. And the factual and funny "A History of St. Mary's County, MD in 23 Minutes" by R. Da Silva (pseudonym) gives us a quick and comical rundown of events that led to the founding of this place we call home. One play, "Butterfly", leaves out the hilarity and opts for a more dramatic, almost avant-garde subject with highly emotional writing and acting. Trish Cole, the author and co-director of the more serious script was born and raised in St. Mary's County and has had works produced in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. Cole said she was "shocked and thrilled that the play got selected here" and calls it "a personal favorite of my works". She teamed up with TNT veteran, Sheila Martel and a cast of skilled actors to present what producer/director Lisa Gregory calls, "a powerful story". Gregory was at the hub of the theater, directing two plays, managing props and lighting, greeting members of the press and even making a cameo as Ghengis Khan. As she multi-tasked her way through the evening, she shared, "There are still a lot of last minute decisions being made!" The Newtowne Players are a diverse group of actors, ranging in both age and experience and many contribute to behind-the-scenes efforts, sewing costumes, working the sound board and doing marketing for the theatre. For the price of a movie or a dinner out, St. Mary's County residents can grab a cultural experience, support the local arts, and be impressed by their community's creative spirit.
