The St. Mary’s County Lodge 2092 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America is a non-profit fraternity of dedicated members volunteering thousands of hours annually to provide much needed funding to charities each year. The St. Mary’s Lodge chooses one deserving charity each year as its focus. For the 2009-2010 Elk Year the lodge has chosen to spotlight the Wounded Warrior Project
WWP is a nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of raising awareness and soliciting the public’s assistance to provide services for severely injured service men and women, The non-profit organization also provides unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members.
WWP began when several individuals recognized the need for returning veterans severely wounded or otherwise damaged while serving in battle areas in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and other actions in the war on terrorism.
A group of veterans were moved by the difficult stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. They realized that something needed to be done more meaningful than the perfunctory brass bands and ticker tape parades. Hence, WWP was formed with the objective to provide real and meaningful support for the severely wounded and to provide aid for both physical and mental post-war trauma victims who had sacrificed themselves in service to the country. More information about the organization may be found on its Web site, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
With the St. Mary’s Elks choosing WWP as its focus, the local lodge has planned a year-long effort to provide funding to the group. To accomplish this it has a calendar of events including dinners, casino nights, bowling and golf tournaments, dances, outdoor festivals and concerts, car washers, basket bingo and much more.
In partnership with TheBAYNET.com, each of these events will be profiled as it draws near with extensive and exclusive coverage by TBN staff.
