Hollywood Man Treks on his Bicycle to Waldorf
HOLLYWOOD - 5/21/2009
|
Hollywood resident, Juan Garcia, twice a week, gets on his bicycle and pedals his way to work in Waldorf. He has been doing so since the weather turned warm in order to get into shape and save a few dollars on gas. “I have an old truck that gets only about 12 miles per gallon so, I’m doing it to save a little money,” said Garcia in a recent interview with TheBAYNET.com.
Right now, Garcia limits his trek to two days per week and to only one way. “My wife works in Waldorf, so she picks me up after she gets off work and takes me home.” The affable bicycle service technician stated that the trip usually takes him two hours at a time and he leaves his Hollywood home at 6 a.m. ”I have to be at work at nine and I clean up at Bike Doctor when I arrive,” said Garcia. His goal is to start bicycling both ways at the beginning of June and eventually more days per week. “I can’t do so on days when I have my other job,” said Garcia. He coaches gymnastics for a number of organizations and is currently helping the Chopticon Cheerleaders with some of their competition moves. When asked how he got into gymnastics, Garcia replied that he took some gymnastics to stay in shape, but was too late to be competitive in the sport. “You have to start stretching muscles and getting limber very young to be a competitive gymnast,” said Garcia. Garcia’s trek should be an example in ways to save money on gas and to help the environment. The 40-year old man also enjoys the exercise and fresh air; something he cannot get behind the wheel of his old gas-guzzling truck.
