Ageless Fun: Garvey, Loffler, Northern Center Activities

Skin Cancer: Prevention, Detection, and Treatment
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types in the United States.  Every year more than 1 million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer. On Friday, May 15, at 10:30 a.m., at the Garvey Senior Activity Center, Dr. George Verghese, local dermatologist and skin cancer expert, will provide an interactive discussion on the prevention, detection and treatment of skin cancer.  To sign up, call Brandy at 301.475.4200, ext. 1062.

The Garvey Senior Activity Center is now offering EnhanceFitness on Wednesday and Friday evenings, 5:30-6:30 p.m. The class includes exercises that focus on aerobic conditioning, strength training, balance, and flexibility.  This class is designed for ages 50 and above. The first class is free then pay $30 for 10 classes.  For more information, call Brandy at 301.475.4200, ext. 1062.

Instead of our normal date of May 15, Project Linus will meet on May 22 at 10 a.m. This National organization that makes blankets for hospitalized or troubled children regularly meets at Loffler the 3rd Friday of the month at 10 a.m. Blankets can be quilted, knitted, croched or even no-sew. ANOTHER BUS TRIP to WASHINGTON NATIONALS GAME SCHEDULED
The May bus trip was so well received we’re offering another opportunity to see the Nats  play- this time as they face the Florida Marlins on Thursday, August 6. The seats will be covered to protect you from rain and sun. Cost for this trip is $55 per person and includes round trip coach bus fare, water and snacks on the bus, along with the price of your ticket. Bus pick up times are: Loffler Senior Activity Center, 9 a.m.; Garvey Senior Activity Center, 9:30 a.m.; and  the Northern Senior Activity Center, 10 a.m.

Volunteer Opportunities…We are always looking for people to teach skills, arts, crafts and ideas at Loffler Senior Activity Center. This is a great way to meet active, fun-loving people while providing a valuable service to the community.  Please call Shellie at 301.737.5670, ext. 1655.

On Friday, May 15 at 10 a.m., a Boutique bingo will be held at the Northern Senior Activity Center. This bingo is complimentary for the ladies as a treat during Mother’s day month; gentlemen will pay to play at $1.50 for 2 cards. Doors close at 9:55 a.m. so get there early. Prizes will include nice costume jewelry, small cocktail purses, wallets and watches and include some name brands like Avon, Ralph Lauren, Swarovski and more. 

On Thursday, May 21 at 2 p.m., a virtual travel presentation to West Africa will be at the Northern Senior Activity Center. Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, Kate Ingersoll from St. Mary’s College will share her experiences while traveling through West Africa. Cultural food from that region will be tasted after the presentation. Walk-ins are welcome, but sign-ups are preferred by noon Wednesday, May 20.

Make a Potting Shed at Loffler Senior Activity Center on Friday, May 22, 10:30 a.m. Bring two (2) six-packs or more of annuals to share; a favorite flower pot/basket and maybe some simple garden tools so you can prepare a flower basket for yourself. We’ll supply the soil. Sign up by calling Tammy at 301.737.5670, ext. 1658 or stop by the reception desk.

Northern Senior Activity Center Photography Contest Deadline
Entries are still being accepted for the photo contest celebrating Living, Love and Laughter! Contact the Center for a full description such as rules, categories, deadlines and award dates. Contest is open to amateur photographers; entry deadline is May 21.  Awards will be given in each category as well as a best overall award which has the added distinction of being framed and displayed permanently at the Northern Senior Activity Center.
