Basketball enthusiasts from around St. Mary's County came out to St. Mary's College Athletic and Recreation Center Saturday, May 2. The Tap's Community Brotherhood third Annual May Madness, 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament invited teams to compete in five divisions which included middle school, ninth and tenth grade, eleventh and twelfth grade, adult men and adult co-ed.

Teams brought a competitive spirit to the half-court matches, while spectators enjoyed the DJ-provided music and the concession stand. St. Mary's College donated the rental fees for the ARC, as well as four basketball camp scholarships for middle-school aged competitors.  Information booths from partner organizations, the Boys & Girls Club and the Tri-County Warriors Amateur Athletic Union Boys Basketball Club were in the lobby and the St. Mary's County Health Department was also on hand holding an immunization clinic.

TCB volunteers worked hard to bring the event together and were thrilled to have 48 teams competing. Kaci Kepferle, TCB's Vice President, said, "It's been amazing this year and our turnout has been awesome!"

Around 1 p.m., TCB Board President, Alex David kicked off the half time activities. After recognizing the volunteers and participants that made the event such a success, the slam dunk and three-point shoot out competitions got underway. Raffle winners were announced and the middle-school division champs received their prizes.

The TCB is a non-profit organization based here in St. Mary's County that was founded in memory of Pat Kepferle, who passed away in 2000 from meningitis as a freshman at Towson University. TCB's Board of Directors consists of Pat's sisters, Kaci and Megan Kepferle, and friends of the family that were inspired by Pat's community spirit. Kaci said that the living room at her parents' house is TCB's command central, having recently been filled with t-shirts and water bottles as the group prepared for the May Madness event. She also shared that the board members and volunteers have close relationships and enjoy the work they do for the TCB.

The TCB supports youth health education, volunteerism and community activities. Along with the May Madness event, they also hold a back-to-school picnic at Nicolette Park and a wine-tasting event, as well as an outreach program which offers support and funding to other area non-profits.  The TCB also offers The Pat Kepferle Friendship Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to at least one St. Mary's County High School graduate that embodies Pat's spirit in life.
