Celebrating National Health Care Volunteer Week: Junior Volunteers
LEONARDTOWN - 4/24/2009

Are you a student who doesn’t know what career path to choose? Do you want to learn more about the medical field? Shefali Shah, a junior volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital, did just that. Shah, a sophomore at Great Mills High School, has volunteered at the hospital for a year. She is a welcoming face at the information desk, helps visitors find patient rooms and assists them in many other ways.
“I love to see all the people and greet them,” she said. “It’s a great feeling to know that you’re making a difference – even a small one – in their lives.”
In honor of National Health Care Volunteer Week, April 19-25, St. Mary’s Hospital would like to thank its junior volunteers who generously donate their time and talents to the hospital. These junior volunteers – 43 volunteers in 2008 – add to the comfort, care and happiness of patients and visitors.
To apply for a junior volunteer position you must be at least 14 years old and in ninth grade. All junior applicants must have at least a 2.0 GPA, provide a copy of their latest report card, submit an essay on why they want to volunteer, provide two letters of recommendation and receive parental/guardian permission.
Download the application at www.smhwecare.com/volunteers.html or call the Volunteer Office at (301) 475-6453. Volunteer positions are currently available for the summer. Participation in this junior program also satisfies the service learning requirement for high school graduation.
Shah also offered some advice for new junior volunteers. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or speak up,” she said. “Relax and have fun.”
