Benjamin Banneker's Second Pre-school Special Education Fair Helps Children

Parents with children from ages zero to five who are late talkers or walkers, or for parents who just want to learn how to help their kids are invited to attend the Benjamin Banneker Early Childhood Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on April 23 to meet and talk with professionals about their child’s development.

At the second event of its kind, parents and children will receive lots of free goodies and valuable information . There will door prizes, snacks and more. This highly popular event is limited and parents wishing to attend must R.S.V.P. to Jessie Williams, Speech Pathologist or Michelle Carroll, Teacher by either calling (301) 475-0260 ext. 109 or email to mccarroll@smcps.org.
 
The Preschool Special Education Information Fair is designed to provide information for families of infants, toddlers, and preschool age children. The fair will address the following areas: communication, oral motor skills, basic concepts, reading, cooking, toilet training, social stories, gross and fine motor skills.
 
The event will be held in the cafeteria of the Benjamin Banneker Early Childhood Center located at 27180 Point Lookout Road in Loveville.
 
The Pre-School Special Education Fair originated when parents of children who were receiving special education services from the school made a request to meet with various service providers in one setting. As a response to this need, the Early Childhood Center organized an informational fair designed to bring together special education teachers, speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, special education para-educators, administrators and parents to discuss innovative and fun ways to improve their child’s development.
 
At this year’s fair, the extraordinary workshops will include:
  • ABC easy as 123: Basic Concepts
  • How sweet it is: Cooking with your child/social language lesson
  • Let’s talk: communication and oral motor skills
  • Ready, set, read: Reading to your child
  • Triumph at the toilet: Toilet training ideas
  • Fun things to make me strong: Physical Therapy
  • Feeling good sensations/get a grip: Occupational Therapy for fine motor and sensory needs
  • PreK—Here I am: Expectations for coming into PK
  • Me, myself, and I —I need to do what? : Social stories 
Parents will leave the fair with tools such as: placemats for speech communication, toys for sensory and fine motor, books, child friendly recipes and more.
