Board to Accept Public Comment on School Redistricting Proposals

CHARLES COUNTY - 4/8/2009

Printer friendly

The Charles County Board of Education is holding two redistricting public hearings to review proposed changes to the North Point High School and Theodore G. Davis Middle School attendance zones. The proposal recommends permanently moving students from two developments, which were temporarily reassigned in November, as well as any other developments not yet producing homes. The redistricting will relieve future enrollment growth at the two schools.

The committee will present its report to the Board on April 14 at its regular meeting, beginning at 1 p.m. A public hearing on the committee alternatives will be held 6:15 p.m., April 14, at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building in La Plata. A copy of the report is available on the Charles County Public Schools Web site at http://www2.ccboe.com/boe/ under Resources.

The committee reviewed the enrollment of new high and middle school students moving into new developments including the Scotland Heights development and the new Town Center South/Westchester at the Pavilion development. Earlier this school year, Superintendent of Schools James E. Richmond temporarily reassigned schools for any students moving into these areas. Additionally, the committee made redistricting recommendations for other developments in the North Point and Davis zones that are not yet producing homes. Developments with students already enrolled at North Point or Davis are not being recommended for rezoning.

The Superintendent will make his recommendation at the May 12 Board meeting, and a public hearing on the superintendent’s recommendation is scheduled the same evening at 6:15 p.m. at the Starkey Building.

The Board will make its final decision on the recommendations on June 9. The public may also comment on the redistricting alternatives at any public forum, which is held at 6 p.m. at each Board meeting or send comments to redistricting@ccboe.com by June 1.

Board members do not take action during public hearings. They listen to comments and possibly ask questions. Individuals and representatives of groups and organizations are given three minutes to speak. Board members also do not respond to questions or comments at the hearing; however, residents may meet with Board members and school system staff following the meeting to discuss individual concerns.
