UPDATE Monday, March 16
On March 13 at 1:04 p.m. the Calvert County Control Center issued a lookout for a vehicle that was involved in a shoplifting at the Office Depot store on Costley Way in Prince Frederick.
A store employee advised Det. Cari Ray of the Criminal Investigative Team that two black males entered the store, filled a red Office Depot bag with 4 Panasonic telephones, and left the store without paying. They entered a vehicle and fled the parking lot heading northbound on Md. Route 4.
An attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle by several Calvert County deputies was not successful and a pursuit ensued. The suspect vehicle, traveling northbound on Md. Route 4 at a rate of over 100 miles per hour, crashed in the median just south of Ward Road in Dunkirk, flipping over and coming to rest on the roof. All three occupants of the vehicle were transported to area hospitals.
The driver, who would not initially give his name, was determined to be Robert Derrick Smith, 47 of Upper Marlboro. Smith was transported via Trooper 2 to PG Shock Trauma in Cheverly. Smith allegedly took his mother’s car, without permission, and drove to Calvert County. Charges of possession of drug paraphernalia (a glass pipe), reckless endangerment, false imprisonment, resisting arrest, theft over $500 and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle are pending. Smith has been released from the hospital and is wanted by the Sheriff's Office.
The front seat passenger, later identified as Wayne Robinson, 53 of Washington, DC, was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital. A warrant was served to Robinson on March 14 at 7:15 p.m. at the Detention center on his charge of theft over $500. The third occupant, a 45-year-old female from Washington, DC, was treated at Calvert Memorial Hospital and released.
At approximately 1 p.m., on Friday, March 13, the Dunkirk and Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squads were dispatched to an auto accident in the median just south of Route 4 and Ward Road.
It was reported that the accident was the result of a high speed chase by police from a shoplifting situation that took place at the Office Depot in Prince Frederick.
At the scene of the accident, there was entrapment and the Squad crews from Dunkirk and Huntingtown made access to the patients so medical team could treat them. There were three patients who were transported. Two were transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital by ambulance from Dunkirk and Huntingtown. The third patient was first treated by ambulance from North Beach and then transported by State Police Helicopter.
Both North and Southbound lanes of State Route 4 were closed until patients were removed from the accident scene.
The incident is under investigation and more detail will be made available as it is provided.
