Consider Upgrading Cabinets and Countertops
SOUTHERN MARYLAND - 3/6/2009

When considering how best to improve the look and functionality of the home, most homeowners need look only as far as some very basic amenities – cabinets and countertops – to make a noticeable difference in the appearance and value in the home. Cabinets and countertops act in concert in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms to provide storage, convenience and utilitarian work surfaces. Cabinets and countertops run the gamut from elegant and refined to rustic to modern to high style. One thing is always the case, no kitchen, bathroom or other such area in the home is complete until the cabinets and countertops are in place.
Homeowners that want to improve their homes value, in many cases, need only to look to these simple areas to make improvements and save money.
Cabinet Hardware
Many older homes have excellent cabinets, but over the years, the cabinet hardware shows signs of the years of wear and tear. A simple upgrade for hinges, knobs and hardware for organization can return cabinets to beautiful accents for the home.
Consider upgrading with not only new hardware that is visible, but adding pullout racks and drawer accessories can go a long way to improving not only the look, but the usefulness of current cabinets. With well thought out additions of accessory holders and other available cabinet hardware, the cabinets can literally set the tone for the entire look of the home.
Cabinets
In many homes the first accent many see are cabinets in the kitchen and baths. These functional accoutrements tend to energize the way a home is perceived. They not only part of the home's organization, but cabinets allow homeowners to store the clutter of unsightly kitchen utensils, bathroom cleaning supplies, linens and toiletries. Cabinets also stash paperwork and office gear. In bedrooms, they store clothes and personal items and more.
All cabinets are designed to maximize storage and convenience. If properly planned, cabinets also offer an effective decorative display.
Cabinets are made from a wide range of materials including hardwoods, laminates, veneers, painted particleboard, and more. Adding a fresh façade to older cabinets is one way a homeowner may add beauty to an existing home for very little expense.
For those with more in the way of budget, new cabinets complete with hardware and accents tend to make a home stand out and vibrant – even brightening up the entire living space.
Countertops
Countertops are the work benches of the home. They are sturdy and durable and designed to withstand years of wear and tear. However, countertops over the years do show signs of stress from daily use.
Kitchen countertops show scars from cooking and cutlery. The same can be said for bathroom countertops. Upgrading countertops is one of the most efficient ways to brighten a home.
As with cabinets, countertops are made from an amazing range of materials in any color imaginable, with unlimited surface textures and styles. For some this extraordinary range of choices becomes a real chore. For that reason, those wishing to upgrade and/or remodel are encouraged to seek the guidance of cabinet and countertop professionals before committing funds to the effort.
