US Senator Ben Cardin Visits North Point HS
WHITE PLAINS - 2/23/2009
|
As a strong supporter of strengthening science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), visited North Point High School on Feb. 23, to tour science, technology, engineering and math classes. He also held a luncheon roundtable discussion with Charles County educators about the need to improve our educational system so that American students will be prepared for the jobs of the future. “A fundamental science and mathematics education is necessary not only for those who will pursue science-based careers, but for all citizens to understand scientific and technical issues that affect their lives,” said Senator Cardin. Senator Cardin was a co-sponsor of the America Competes Act, which was enacted into law in 2007. It calls for funding to strengthen science, technology, engineering and math education in the United States. Studies show that American children lag far behind other developed countries in these areas. Senator Cardin supports funding for a Charles County Digital Classroom Project, which is likely to be included in the FY2009 budget. Congress is expected to pass the FY2009 budget by March.
