The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office received a Governor’s Award for Camp D.A.R.E. at the 29th Annual Governor’s Crime Prevention Awards Ceremony which was held on Dec. 9, 2008.  Camp D.A.R.E was nominated by the Maryland D.A.R.E. Officer’s Association.  Camp D.A.R.E. was implemented in the summer of 2008 and was supported through donations from various organizations.

Camp D.A.R.E, a week long summer camp, was coordinated between the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Mary’s County Public Schools.  Sixty kids were taught the Elementary School DARE Program by St. Mary’s County and Calvert County Sheriff’s Office D.A.R.E instructors.  The lessons presented provided campers with usable skills to help them make wise and healthy choices. Campers received a certificate of completion at the end of camp.  In addition to the D.A.R.E. lessons, campers also participated in numerous camping activities including arts and crafts, recreational competitions and public safety related demonstrations.

The program was so successful Sheriff Timothy Cameron will implement Camp D.A.R.E again in the summer of 2009.  For further information about Camp D.A.R.E.  contact Sgt. Diane Fenwick at (301) 475-4200 ext. 1998.
