On Dec. 5 and Dec. 6, Sotterley Plantation hosted two festive events; The 8th Annual Holiday Candlelight Tours and the 12th Annual Family Plantation Christmas.

Family and friends enjoyed the productions by the Port Tobacco Players, as this year’s drama portrayed “A Governor’s Christmas”, and was set in the 1790’s period of Sotterley’s history. Performed within Sotterley's historic mansion, the special dramatic recreation unfolded against a backdrop of period decorations. Guests enjoyed live seasonal music by the premiere choral groups from area high schools and complimentary cookies and mulled cider.

The Family Plantation Christmas proved to be fun for the whole family. Children
visited with St. Nick and his elves, took horse-drawn taxi rides across the Plantation as they listed to carolers sing, made crafts and played games. The children also had the opportunity to shop for their families and loved ones at Santa's Secret Shop. Mrs. Claus was busy in her kitchen as guests enjoyed her homemade treats.

Sotterley Plantation is a mainstay for Southern Maryland. The Plantation is older than Mount Vernon, Monticello and, in fact, the United States. The property is situated on the banks of the Patuxent River, standing as the last tidewater plantation in the State open to the public.

The historical landmark features the magnificent mansion, a wide array of outbuildings, including a very rare slave cabin nestled on 95 beautiful rolling acres.
