Reader's Letter: PHS Fire Alarm System

CALVERT COUNTY - 12/9/2008

By Jeff Walker, Assistant Superintendent of Administration Calvert County Public Schools

Dear PHS Parents, Students, and Staff,

This communication is being provided to share information with you about a problem with the Patuxent High School fire alarm system.  Last week, several components of the fire alarm system were found to be in need of repair.

CCPS maintenance workers and outside consultants were brought in and the system was restored to functional operation.  Students were not in the building when the system was not functioning at a safe level.  Since last week, we have observed several faults in the fire alarm system and we are concerned that the equipment may not continue to work beyond the next 12 months or so.  We are working with our contractors to repair or replace the system so that it will operate normally.

Currently the fire alarm and suppression systems are working, but CCPS employees are providing additional oversight and monitoring of the system under the direction of the State Fire Marshal’s Office to take all necessary and appropriate life safety measures.  These measures include constant monitoring of all systems throughout the building, regular tests of equipment, visual inspections of the building, and frequent contact with the Fire Marshal.  School administrators are prepared to make emergency announcements over the PA system if necessary.  We anticipate that repairs will continue to be made in a timely manner and that a long term resolution will be in place within the next 8 weeks.

Further communication will be provided as the situation warrants.  As you know, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is of the utmost importance.

Should you have questions, please contact either Nancy Highsmith, PHS Principal, at (410) 535-7865 or Thomas “Tuck” Powers, Director of School Facilities, at (410) 535-7282.

Sincerely,

Jeff Walker

Assistant Superintendent of Administration

Calvert County Public Schools
