Local Students Win Holiday Card Contest

Nine Charles County Public Schools students were recently named winners in Superintendent of Schools James E. Richmond’s 2008 holiday card contest. Christine Watkins, a junior at Maurice J. McDonough High School, is the contest’s grand-prize winner. She will receive a $200 savings bond, a $50 Borders gift certificate and 50 copies of her card to send to her family and friends this holiday. Watkins' design will also be featured on the Superintendent’s holiday card, which is distributed to the president of the United States, Maryland senators, delegates, congressmen, county commissioners, community members and staff. The contest is held annually and first, second, and third-place winners are chosen at the elementary, middle and high-school levels. The grand-prize winner is chosen from the first place candidates. First place contest winners are Leah Kelley, a fifth-grade student at T.C. Martin Elementary School; Gerald Williams, an eighth-grade student at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School; and Watkins, a junior at McDonough. Kelley and Williams will each receive a $100 savings bond, a $50 Borders gift certificate and 50 copies of their card. Second place winners are Nia Matos, a fifth-grade student at C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School; Kolbi Sims, a sixth-grade student at Stoddert; and Lara Lee, a senior at La Plata High School. They will each receive 25 copies of their card. Third place winners are Jacob Blankenship, a fourth-grade student at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School; Sarah Newman, a seventh-grade student from Milton M. Somers Middle School; and Michelle Lee, a senior at La Plata. They will each receive 25 copies of their card. |
