Overdraft Fee Causes Customer to Go Berserk

On Nov. 28, Deputy Gill responded to PNC Bank on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, for a report of a disorderly subject.  Upon arrival, he met Richard Leon Williams, 42 of Lexington Park, who was upset and complained in a loud voice the bank would not give him his money.  Deputy Gill asked Williams to lower his voice as he attempted to investigate the situation.  Williams refused and became even louder.  Deputy Gill spoke with a bank employee who explained Williams had been charged an overdraft fee which he (Williams) was upset about.  The bank employee asked Williams to step into an office where the overdraft fee could be explained.  Williams became disorderly in the office and broke a computer and monitor inside the bank office.  Richard Williams was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and destruction of property.

Homer77 12/3/2008 at 8:36 AM Smooth Really nice choice he made. Instead of losing $25 or $35 on an overdraft fee, he busts up the office equipment worth a $1000 or so. Anybody think the bank will let this slide and no charges will be filed? At any rate, maybe a switch to decaf might be in order. Reply to This Comment

It was the deputies fault at walmart also, so they say. Or is this just alot of people who dont take responsiblity for there actions?

Sorry I can't believe the number of comments I read about a police officer being rude. When any police officer has to give someone an order to stop doing something, they use what is know as Command Presence. They have to control the situation. Apparently, many people think that they should say "Please" as in "Please stop beating your wife" or "please don't steal that computer". As for the thing at Wal Mart, I have already stated that I was there (I got my game) and the deputy was 100% professional. The cop-haters seemed to see it another way!

jmh1957 12/3/2008 at 12:05 PM I concur I concur with Richard - I switched banks a year ago because of PNC overdraft fees. I was charged hundreds because of the way PCN handles things. Since switching to Cedar Point Federal Credit union, not ONE fee of any kind because they work with their customers and treat them great!!!!! Reply to This Comment

funtime65 12/3/2008 at 12:34 PM This is outrageous I firmly believe Mr. Williams was a victim of the school system. He should have been taught how to balance a check book in math class. Also, the "Rude" deputy should not have talked to him in an unfriendly manner. Reply to This Comment

Why is it that every time someone gets in trouble for doing something WRONG....theres always a bunch of idiots that stick up for them. So now it's not only the banks fault for charging him when he over drew his account, but its the deputies fault for being rude? Hows the one that broke the computer and monitor? I suppose thats the fault of the Deputy and the bank employee for making the customer angry? And where the hell does it even say that the Deputy spoke in a "rude" manner? Since when is asking someone to lower their voice rude? So i guess next time Im at the movie theater and a bunch of little ghetto punks come in and start being loud (as usual) it would be considered rude of me to ask them to lower their voices. oh and funtime65....not all schools teach you how to balance check books. Theres this class...it's called accounting, its a class you can choose to take. Guess he should have.

My parents wouldn't get me a pony when I was 8 years old because society had a law against it. Called it zoning, or some such nonsense. I've zoned many times myself but still can't understand why they wouldn't let me have that pony. It's just not FAIR!!!! I think I will go to the bank and smash a computer. I can't be overdrawn because I still have checks!!!

Just seems lately there's a bunch of people on here who do nothing but stick up for the idiots who get in trouble and always say how horrible the law enforcement is. But some guy causing a scene because of overdraft fees? It's his fault he over drew his account. I used to work at a bank and I have heard every excuse in the book from people. Reply to This Comment

NotBornHere 12/4/2008 at 11:57 AM Reply to hooligan77: True A lot of us have been kidding around with - and basically egging on - the tools that you are referring to. And they always come back for more. Maybe they had a class for being a tool and they worked hard for extra credit. Not sure. What seems really amazing on this story is the fact that PNC offered to cut the overdraft fees in half and this tool still went off. I have never heard of a bank doing that before. It sounds to me that they were trying to be good guys and got stabbed in the back for it. I am not a PNC customer but they do look appealing right now.

I work for a bank and most of the time, the bank will refund the first overdraft fee and even the second because things happen. It seems to me that he probably had an issue keeping money in his account and balancing his check-book. When people overdraw their accounts, it's always the bank's fault. I see it everyday. It amazes me how incompetent people are sometimes.
