The Maryland State Police regret to inform you of the death of First Sgt. Tobin Theodore Triebel, a flight paramedic of the Aviation Command.

Triebel, 39 of New Market, served the Department of State Police and the citizens of Maryland for 13 years and four months. As a licensed flight paramedic, he was assigned to Aviation Headquarters at Martin's State Airport as the Supervisor of the Training Section.
 
Shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7 Triebel was jogging on a rural roadway in Hillsboro, North Carolina. He was struck by a tree trimming truck traveling northbound on New Sharon Church Road near Bill Poole Road in Northeastern Orange County.
 
Triebel was airlifted to the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Triebel had been vacationing in the area with his family at the time of the accident.

Triebel was appointed to the Trooper Candidate Police Academy class in July, 1995 and graduated in the top of his class.  He was assigned to the Golden Ring Barrack as a road trooper, and in 1996 was selected to join the Aviation Command where he worked as a Trooper Flight Paramedic.

At the time of his death, he was the Aviation Command Training Section Supervisor.  Prior to his current assignment, he served as the Western Region Supervisor overseeing the Frederick and Cumberland Aviation Sections, and had previously been assigned as Supervisor of the Frederick Aviation Section.

Triebel recently distinguished himself and the Maryland Department of State Police by completing an executive level management course. This accomplishment led to his designation as a Certified Medical Transport Executive by the Association of Air Medical Services, a nationally recognized industry organization.

Prior to his career with the Maryland State Police, Triebel served as a paramedic in the EMS Division of the District of Columbia Fire Department. Triebel graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County where he majored in Emergency Health Services and became nationally registered as an EMT-Paramedic. While at UMBC he met the love of his life Susan Shzyock. 

He had a passion for rugby and played with the Frederick Rugby Club. He managed his daughter's soccer team, the Thunder Magic and was also the Assistant Coach of the Linganore Urbana Youth Athletic Association Red Devils girls’ soccer team for the last six years.        

Triebel is survived by his wife Susan, and daughters Hanna, 16 and Erika, 13, and many other family members. Funeral service arrangements will be made available once finalized.
