Calvert Senior Joins Hall of Fame
PRINCE FREDERICK - 11/2/2008
|
Russ Horton, of Solomons, joined the Class of 2008 inductees into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame at Michaels Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, on Oct. 23. His nomination and selection was in honor of his volunteer services in Maryland, more specifically, in Calvert County. Horton was nominated by Calvert Hospice for his support of Hospice families and bereavement clients and involvement in fundraising for Hospice House. “Russ has supported bereaved clients with compassion, care and a deep spirituality,” said Ann Lavezzo, Calvert Hospice volunteer coordinator. As a family service volunteer, he sits with patients, offers gentle support, accompanies family members on their journey, and provides respite care. Horton also started an annual Hospice fundraiser, Mardi Gras. The event, held at Asbury-Solomons, not only raises funds for Calvert Hospice, but also raises awareness about Hospice services. Having lost two children of his own, Horton chooses to support bereavement clients who have also lost a child. He willingly shares his counseling skills and life experiences to console others whether he is assisting with the Time to Heal: Death of a Child bereavement support group or traveling the county to comfort grieving families. “His leadership skills, dedication and willingness to serve the community make him exceptionally deserving of entry into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of fame,” said Lavezzo. |
