The Calvert Marine Museum is pleased to announce the publication of its newest book, Islands in a River - Solomons and Broomes Island, Maryland. Under the direction of Richard Dodds, Curator of Maritime History, the Calvert Marine Museum drew on its extensive archives, as well as information and photographs from some of the older families in the area. This 230-page book educates the reader about the story of Solomons and Broomes Island, once the most important watermen’s communities in Calvert County. Solomons and Broomes Island’s nineteenth century origins are traced back to the oyster industry, where oystering in winter and farming in summer formed the backbone of the local economy. Over time, these former independent and isolated communities have been transformed by a growing population, a spreading network of roads, and a decline in the productivity of the Patuxent River. Islands in a River highlights the families who developed Solomons and Broomes Island, and the schools, stores, and churches that served the needs of the residents during this time. In text and historic photographs, the book traces the rich tapestry of the region’s seafood, boatbuilding, and recreational fishing industry. Funding was made possible by a grant from the Maryland Historical Trust. Copies of Islands in a River may be purchased for $15.95 at the Calvert Marine Museum Store in Solomons, Len’s Marina in Broomes Island, and at the Calvert County Historical Society. Richard Dodds will be signing books on Sunday, Oct. 12 from noon – 2p.m. during Patuxent River Appreciation Days in the Calvert Marine Museum lobby. For more information about Islands in a River – Solomons and Broomes Island, Maryland, please contact Richard Dodds at (410) 326-2042, ext. 31. |
