6 Tips for Choosing the Best Binoculars for Outdoor Activities

Binoculars are optical devices having two telescopes fitted together and clamped over a common horizontal stand. The two telescopes have same optical features, starting from focal length to the lens diameters. It has two lenses for the magnification purpose, a narrower eye piece and a wider objective lens. Both the lens are made up of sane material, hence got the same refractive index. The objective lens with a wider focal length forms a diminished image within the focal length of the eye piece lens. As a result when refraction occurs at the second lens, the final image formed is highly magnified, appears closer and virtual. It follows the same optical mechanism as of a telescope.
However there is a difference between the telescopes magnified image and a binocular magnified image. In Binoculars, the presence of two telescopes side by side helps in a bifocal vision of our eyes, thus binocular optical mechanism. In telescope, it is a monocular vision since it is made for monofocal vision. As a result binoculars produce a three dimensional, more refined and high quality image with a wider field view. But telescopes produce a two dimensional image with less refined characteristics. You can say binocular are a modified version of telescopes fit for outdoor activities like bird viewing, hunting, trekking or climbing or even for under water activities.
Now-a-days, compact binoculars are small in size, easy to handle and port. Compact binoculars though offer a high level magnification and best field view but they dint have a good best light collection feature. Whenever you are going to choose the binoculars, you need to keep certain things in mind. Consider then as a health tip list that would help you to choose the best binocular for your outdoor activities.

Not all activities have the same designated binoculars for viewing far- off objects in a closer range. The binocular types depend upon your activity since for different purposes, the magnification, viewing range, eye relief, eyepiece and objective material choice and other optical parameters vary. For instance let us tell you what the best suited binocular for the activities is.
I. For hunting purpose, you need to have binoculars with magnification power between 7× to 10×. For wildlife purposes and to catch the view of far off animals without trespassing into their domains you can go for higher magnification range.
II. Bird watches prefer an 8×42 optic binocular for close field vision and extremely high three dimensional magnification range. Nikon prostuff7S 8×42 waterproof binocular is one of the best one for bird catcher. They give you essentially high magnified image of the making birds around you.
III. Under water diver uses water proof binoculars with wider objective lens and waterproof material and protective rubber cap for the lens. They usually prefer a magnification of 7× to 10×.
For mountain climbing or trekking, you can use the compact binoculars as they are light- weighted, can be hung around your neck and easy to port.

Magnification power is the ratio of focal length of the objective to the focal length of the eyepiece. It can also be defined as the ratio of the height of the object to the height of the image. The magnification power varies from one to the other binocular.
Choose the binocular based on what magnification you will need for viewing the objects. More the magnification power more will be the weight of the binocular. Hence sometimes needs a tripod stand to balance the eye level. Also higher magnification reduces the field view as it focuses mainly on the object.
Qualitatively, these parameters define the range of your vision or the angle subtended by your eyes at the arc formed. It covers the entire area you can view while fixating your gaze. Rather than magnification power, the field of focus focuses on multiple objects at a same time. It is the reciprocal of magnification power.
For binocular users, if you want to view more area at a time and down the details, choose one with a less magnification power since that would give you a wide field viewing capability.
For outdoor activities, pocket binoculars play an important role in giving high field of view. However if you choose high definition magnifying lens, then the field of view will be lessened as in case of heavy weighted binoculars.

Eye Relief is an optical property of a binocular that allows you to view the entire field at the sharp angle without any vignetting, shadow charades or translucency in the formed image. This means the light beam exiting the eye piece is focused all together on your lens through your pupil. But a telescope that has longer eye piece focal length since that gives you higher eye relief. For those who wear glasses, don’t go for ones having eye relief below 15 mm. always prefer a longed focal length as in 16mm or more.
Sometimes in the long run for having high magnification, we forget that more the magnification more will be the distortions in the clarity of the image due to shaking, improper focussing. In such cases, some binocular are providing a solution to this problem. Like canon is making binoculars with an image stabilizer pre installed that prevents the blurring of the image.
The pocket binocular that is on fashion now days amongst travelers provides a sharp quality of image and also a larger view of the field.
Magnification power allows you to magnify a single object at a time. It does not allow you to adjust the magnification power. However, the zooming features of the binoculars allow you to have an access to multiple magnifications at a time.
