5 Fun Outdoor Family Activities to Try this Weekend

Tired of seeing your kids spend their days glued to the television? Then check out these 5 fun outdoor family activities to switch things up.

1. Play Capture the Flag

This is a perfect outdoor game for larger families. You'll need to find a field to play on so that you can really spread out. Now divide into two teams, with each person placing a flag at the back line of the playing field.

The goal is to dash to the opposite side of the field and collect a flag from the other side without being tagged out. The first team to collects all of the other team's flags wins! This game is especially fun to play at night.

2. Study the Stars

There are few things in life as inspiring as the night sky. Stargazing can be as simple as spreading blankets in the backyard and lying on your back with your pets to take in the grandeur of the universe, or you might choose to use a telescope to take a closer look at the planets and constellations.

We suggest buying a star chart to help you better understand exactly what you're looking at. It's also fun to make a game of memorizing the various celestial bodies.

3. Go On a Treasure Hunt

A family treasure hunt can be as complex or simple as you like. Visit a dollar store to pick up a handful of plastic jewels or other treasure to hide around your lawn and garden.

You can even make your own treasure map, soaking it in tea or coffee to give the aged look of an authentic treasure map that's been lost for centuries. Kids love the thrill of discovery!

4. Learn to Drive RC Cars or Drones

Kids thrive on the thrill and challenge of driving RC cars and drones. You can race them on the grass, on dirt, pavement, or take to the sky with a cool drone. This is an activity that also teaches them hand/eye coordination. And it's also as fun for adults as it is for kids.

RC Planet is a great place to check out some of the most amazing RC vehicle and parts around.

5. Visit a Local Fire Station

Fire stations hold a natural fascination for children, and thus are a great field trip destination for the entire family. Most local stations are more than happy to schedule tours for kids. This is also the perfect opportunity for kids to learn about fire safety.
