5 TIPS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR STAY IN REHAB MORE SUCCESSFUL

I had seen my cousin’s journey in rehab from start to finish. Methamphetamine slowly led him to his death. His journey had its highs and lows, but the lows got the better of him.

He was in and out of rehab for more than 10 years due to meth. It wasn’t always a sad story. He became a preacher after six years of rehab, then he came out and spent more time with his family. But like a strong undertow pull, he relapsed and went back in again. And it all went downhill from there.

Roughly 114 people  die daily because of substance abuse. However, according to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 90 percent  of addicts who badly need rehab don’t even get a chance to go into one.

There could be many factors for this. Family, support, monetary, commitment, circumstance, or environment are to name a few. Although rehab may be the last resort to help our loved ones recover from the destructive effects of drugs, sometimes it can be futile. The success of rehabilitation will still solely depend on the individual. No matter how much financial aid or moral support you give, if a person isn’t willing to cooperate, he or she is bound to fail. Though it’s been almost a year, I’m still mourning for my cousin’s demise as I’m writing this article. And in retrospect, I wish I could’ve helped more, or I wish he could’ve helped himself more. If you’re struggling with rehab, here are five tips  that will make your stay more successful.

1. Take Responsibility

There’s no other person to blame but yourself. Taking responsibility for your actions and accepting the fact that you need help is the first step to healing. If you have a wife or children, think of them. If you’re hurting, they’re hurting too.

Work towards being with them by cleaning up your act. It’s going to be an uphill battle, but if you show commitment to the entire process, regardless if it’ll take three, five, or eight years, the journey will be a lot easier.

2. Be Proactive

You are the only person who can help yourself. Rehab doesn’t mean you’ll sit around inside the center all day to avoid drugs. It goes beyond that. It involves a holistic healing process which cleanses the mind and body. Hence, a lot of treatment programs  are catered to every individual’s needs.

Detoxification is usually the first step to cleansing the body. One-on-one or group counseling is also another program. Community-based programs will also enable you to socialize and regain other people’s trust. Bible readings are also part of the process that can restore your spiritual and emotional strength.

Lastly, some rehab centers will most likely involve your family and friends in some programs. Get involved. Ask questions. Speak up. The more you open up and are proactive in these programs, the faster you’ll achieve sobriety.

3. Adhere to Rules

Expect that there will be a lot of rules once you’re in rehab. Even leaving the facility is regulated by most rehab centers. Some of them require no cellphones, no computers, no relationships inside the facility, no missed attendance during programs, no television, no music, ultimate abstinence from drugs or alcohol, highly-structured schedules, or chaperoned meetings outside the rehab facility . Don’t try to fight these rules. These are all made to make you better.

4. Be Patient

Rehabilitation can take years. That’s what makes this journey so hard because anything can happen. Anything can provoke you that can flip every hard work you’ve done around. And that’s okay. Rehab wasn’t meant to be easy.

That’s why a lot of addicts never went to rehab because it’s a challenging battle. But accepting and going into rehab is already an achievement. So once you’re inside, be patient and open-minded to have a more seamless experience.

5. Know That You Have a Support System

Always remember that you’re not in this alone. You have family and friends who love and support you and will be with you through your highs and lows. You also have your rehab mentors who will guide you and your rehab friends who are in the same boat. Talking helps and will always make you feel better.

Final Thoughts

These tips might seem doable, but it can be a challenge sometimes. A successful transformation will partly depend on your mindset. If you have the dedication and optimism to change for good, rehab might be the most beautiful journey in your life.
