Washington (NNS)- The United States Navy made the decision to restore rating title as of Dec. 21. This rare move comes three months after the controversial decision to remove ratings titles. Effective immediately, sailors may continue to be address by their rating.
In September, the U.S. Navy made the stunning announcement that it would eliminate rating titles. There was strong backlash following that announcement. In an unprecidented move, Navy leaders reversed their decision and decided to restore job titles across the fleet.
Naval Leaders say the change became a distraction across the fleet and called the reversal a “course correction.” Navy leadership spoke with thousands of sailors during their visits throughout the Fleet over the past few months and it was clear many were unhappy about the elimination of rating titles.
Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral John Richardson, with the support of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Steve Giordano, made the decision to restore titles.
