Shoppers show their love of small businesses

Leonardtown, MD- After the hustle and bustle to find those great deals on Black Friday, hundreds of shoppers took the time to slow down and enjoy Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25.

The Leonardtown Business Association once again hosted Small Business Saturday in downtown, midtown and uptown.

One business had people lined up outside before the doors even opened Saturday morning. Heritage Chocolates, right in the town square, had a plethora of children waiting to join in on candy cane making.

The candy shop invited children for two opportunities on Saturday to not only watch, but to help in the making of candy canes.

The store was packed with little faces peeking in on the candy making process. The aroma of peppermint filled the area while the chefs were cooking up the holiday treat.

Elsewhere, most small businesses enjoyed a slower pace as shoppers took advantage of the beautiful fall day to leisurely walk their way from store to store.

At Home Elements, Darrin Beck, the chairman of this year’s Small Business Saturday committee, said he had a few shoppers in first thing in the morning. In the back of his store, carolers were warming up their voices, preparing to entertain shoppers with the sounds of the season.

In the center of the square, a large tent was set up to accommodate several small businesses who do not have a store front but wanted to share their unique gifts with shoppers.

In uptown, Lola Belle Co. was beaming with Christmas spirit. “It’s been pretty good today. As the day goes on, we expect to get busier,” Amy Thompson, owner, said.

Small Business Saturday has been growing in popularity around the country, but here in Southern Maryland, Thompson was one of the first to recognize the need to participate in the shopping promotion. She said participation continues to grow each year. “I think people come out because they genuinely want to support small businesses. I feel like Small Business Saturday people tend to make it more enjoyable and more relaxed.”
