More fathers are single parents than a decade ago

Hollywood, MD- According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau study, more fathers now have full custody of their children.

New statistics show 16.1-percent of children who live with one parent are living with their dad—that’s up from 12.5-percent in 2007.

Overall, nearly 20 million children are growing up in a one-parent household—that’s 27-percent of all children under the age of 18. That is a bit of a jump from a decade ago when 25.8-percent of children under 18 were living with one parent.

In nearly half of the situations where children live with just one parent, the most common marital status of the mother is never married. The most common marital status of the father is divorced.

According to the same data, households continue to grow smaller. In 1940 the average American household was 3.7 people. Today it is 2.5. And less than 1 in 10 households have five or more people—that’s a decrease of 23-percent in 1960.

The average age of when adults first marry is also inching closer to the age of 30. In 2017, the average age of marriage for men is 29.5 and 27.4 for women. Married couples account for 69-percent of all families with children under age 18--compared to 93-percent in 1950.
