Lexington Park, MD - Week 8 has come to a close, and it brought Southern Maryland a new rushing yards leader, an unexpected route, and one more upset.

Calvert traveled to La Plata and left with a dominating 63-20 win. The Cavs rushed for 408 yards and eight touchdowns and threw for 37 yards and one additional touchdown. Senior running back Dre Mackall had a stellar performance, rushing for 347 yards and six touchdowns on his own. Mackall’s performance elevated him to second in the state for rushing yards on the season at 1,281 yards. The Cavaliers travel to North Point to face an undefeated North Point team.

The Week 8 SMAC Game of the Week saw Lackey face Thomas Stone. The Chargers took care of business, handily defeating the Cougars 43-9. The Chargers were able to rush for 339 yards, with two players—Jayson Wilmer (Sr) and Jordan Bryant (Jr)—rushing for 100 or more yards. Wilmer also rushed for a 65-yard touchdown. The other touchdowns were scored by D. Washington (Sr), three touchdowns; and R. Middleton (Sr) with two touchdowns. In addition to two rushing touchdowns, Middleton completed 7 of 10 passes for 127 yards. Lackey’s defense also played well, holding the Cougars to just 139 yards. The only touchdown scorer for Stone was Trent Gaskins (Sr) with one touchdown. Gaskins also led the team with 51 rushing yards. Thomas Stone’s other two points came from a fumbled kick return that resulted in a safety. Lackey travels to (2-6) Patuxent Friday at 7 p.m., and Stone plays Westlake at North Point’s field on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the 301 Classic and one of the co-games of the week.

Perhaps the most notable thing from week 8 was an upset few saw coming. Great Mills, who had only one win coming into week 8, defeated a talented St. Charles team 16-6. Led by senior Matrel Mason’s 186 rushing yards and rushing touchdown, the Hornets handed the Spartans their second loss in a row. Great Mills improved to (2-6) on the season and St. Charles fell to (6-2). The Hornets will face Leonardtown at home Friday, and the Spartans will return home to face Chopticon.
