Parks and Points – Having fun at the Oyster Festival

Leonardtown, MD - Congratulations to Hidemi Walsh of Centreville, VA who took top honors in the 38th Annual National Oyster Cook-off which took place during the 51st Annual US Oyster Festival held at the St. Mary's County Fairgrounds October 21- 22.  Ms. Walsh won first prize in the Hors d'oeuvres category and then went on to win the overall Grand Prize with her "Miso-Mayo Oyster Gratin" , mixing her native Japanese cuisine with Western cooking techniques.

Also taking honors in the Cook-off were Tammy Davis of Chesapeake Beach, MD with  "Oyster Pan Roast with Harissa and Spicy Pita Chips" ( first place in the Soups and Stews category, and Best Presentation Award), and Debbie Reynolds of Waldorf, MD with "Oysters Fra Diavolo with Creamy Parmesan Polenta" (first place in the Main Dish category, and the People's Choice Award).

Presenting the awards at the Grandstand on Saturday, October 21 was the reigning Mrs. Maryland. The Oyster Festival is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Lexington Park.

Tammy Davis was the 2016 Grand Prize Winner in the Soups and Stews category with "Coconut Curry Oyster Soup" and Debbie Reynolds was the 2016 second-place winner in the Main Dish category with her "Eggs Benedict on Oyster Muffins with Oyster Hollandaise"; Ms. Reynolds is also a previous Grand Prize Winner in the National Oyster Cook-off.

Rounding out the cook-off contestants were Suzanne Boisseau of Odenton, MD with "Chard Grilled Oysters," Thomas Faglon of Somerset, NJ with "Fennel and Orange Oysters Baked in Parchment," Ronna Farley of Rockville, MD with "Cheesy Oyster Bisque with Crunchy Garlic Croutons," Jack Campbell of Clackamas, OR with "Oysters over Cauliflower Rice with Fennel Cream Sauce," Mary Edwards of Long Beach, CA with "Thai Red Curry with Crispy Oysters,"  and yours truly, Ellynne Brice Davis of beautiful, downtown Leonardtown with "Old Chesapeake Bay Oyster Chowder." Ms. Reynolds was a last-minute replacement for Rod Borowy of Arnold, MD who was scheduled to cook "Chesapeake Oyster Shepherd's Pie" but was unable to attend.

Local GOP’s annual dinner
The Republican Central Committee of St. Mary's County will hold its annual Lincoln/Reagan Dinner Thursday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in California, MD. Guest Speaker is David Bossie, the Maryland Republican National Committeeman. A Southern Maryland buffet of stuffed ham, fried oysters and sides will be served. Greg Sauter will be presented with the SMC RCC Republican Man of the Year Award, and Jennifer Boyd-Hayden will receive the SMC RCC Republican Woman of the Year Award.
