Missing kayaker found in Tarkill Cove


UPDATE 9/12/2017 1:55 p.m.- On September 12, 2017, a citizen contacted the Emergency Communication Center (ECC) to report they had located the body of a deceased adult male in a body of water located at Tarkill Cove (St. George's Creek) in Piney Point, Maryland. Based on the nature of the investigation, detectives from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

The male, identified as Ronald Westerfield, was reported missing by co-workers on September 11, 2017. Westerfield was transferred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Maryland for an autopsy. At this time, there does not appear to be any suspicious factors surrounding Westerfield's death.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office would like to thank staff members of the Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police for their assistance with the investigation.

UPDATE; 9/11/2017 5:30 p.m.:

On September 11, 2017, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported missing person in Piney Point, MD.  Co-workers advised Ronald Henry Westerfield, Age 58 of Piney Point, Maryland was last seen on September 9, 2017, at approximately 1:00 P.M. kayaking in the Piney Point area.  When Westerfield did not report for work this morning his employer contacted police for assistance.  Earlier today the kayak was located on a small beach in Piney Point unoccupied.  Additional resources from the Department of Natural Resources Police, U.S. Coast Guard, Valley Lee Volunteer Fire Department and Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship are actively assisting with the search for Westerfield.

UPDATE 2:37 p.m.- Crews are searching for a missing kayaker. The kayaker has been missing since Saturday. The Kayak was found tied up with the life preserver and oar in it. Multiple units are in boats and on foot searching the area. Also, Trooper 7 is providing air search support. 

Update 2:27 p.m.- There are unconfirmed reports that this rescue may be related to an unmanned kayak found on Saturday. 

(Piney Point, MD) 9/11/2017 1:43 p.m.- An inland waterway rescue has been dispatched to Piney Point Road in the area of St. George's Avenue.

Use caution in the area, and watch for emergency crews.
