Crabs give up six, drop opener to Revolution

(York, PA., Sep. 12, 2017) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (28-37) dropped the series opener against the York Revolution (37-28) 6-1, as York grabbed the lead early and never looked back.

The Revolution got on the board early on a solo homerun from Jared Mitchell in the bottom of the first. The Revs then added three more runs in the second, taking an early 4-0 lead on Daryl Thompson (9-7). Thompson got the first batter in the inning on a groundout, before Travis Witherspoon reached on a single. Ryan Dent followed with a double to right-center field, allowing Witherspoon to circle the bases and score. After a strikeout picked up the first out in the inning, Alonzo Harris hit his 22nd homerun of the season, a two-run shot to extend the lead.

Frank Gailey (14-9) was dominant on the mound for York, not allowing a hit until a one-out single from Devon Rodriguez in the fifth. The southpaw allowed just one more hit in the sixth, finishing his night with six scoreless innings and tying a season-high with seven strikeouts.

Back-to-back hits led off the sixth inning, as the Revs added another run to their tally. Rubi Silva started with a double, coming around to score on a single from Luis Cruz. York then turned their five-run advantage over to their bullpen, as Michael Click came on for the seventh. After a groundout started the game, the Blue Crabs were able to get on the board with a solo homerun from Michael Snyder, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

York responded immediately though, on a solo homerun from Chase Simpson. The bullpen took over from there, as Brad Allen worked a scoreless eighth before turning the ninth over to Chase Hutchingson. The lefty cruised to a 1-2-3 inning, finishing off the 6-1 win for the Revolution in the series opener.

The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, September 13th for the second game of the series against the Revolution. Southern Maryland will send RHP Drew Hayes (8-8, 4.03) to the mound, looking to even up the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. on Wednesday at PeoplesBank Park.
