Patricia M. “Pat” Hammond

Patricia M. “Pat” Hammond, 85, passed away on June 22, 2019 in LaPlata, Maryland, after a lingering and persistent illness from which she had rebounded numerous times, which inevitably took her away from her beloved husband.

Born on May 26, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Phillip Russell Young and Emily Estelle (DeMarr) Young both of whom she lost as a young girl. Pat was raised by her grandfather, Edward DeMarr, and she grew up working side by side with him on their farm in Aquasco.

Pat met her husband- to-be in 1954 in Marblehead, Massachusetts.  John E. (Jack) Hammond, was a handsome and distinguished Corporal in the United States Marine Corp and she fell head over heels in love, and they married two years later.  Together they shared 63 joyful and loving years of marriage.

Pat worked for C & P Telephone Company as an Assignment Clerk until she became disabled in 1973 and she was medically forced to retire.  Never one to give into an ache or pain, Pat enjoyed tending to her vast vegetable garden, growing produce to share with friends and neighbors. She was proud of the beautiful and sturdy home Jack built for them and their continuous flow of pets.

Pat and Jack were “adopted” as members of the Goad family also of Aquasco. They enjoyed the love and friendship the Goad family gave as it grew and evolved into their own extensive family: Ricky and Midgie Goad, Jamie and Amber Guy (Rylie, Brooke and Brody); Richard and Ashley Ednie (Graham, Caden and Kayla) and Brent and Jessica Goad (Charlotte, Gracie and Colton) and an abundance of great and special neighbors.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Young.  Pat is survived by her husband Jack, her sister-in-law, Catherine Woods of Glens Falls, NY, her brother-in-law, Robert Hammond of Castle Hayne, NC and her “adopted” family and friends.

Pat’s Life Celebration Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26th from 5-8pm at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622 with Family Reflections at 7pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, June 27th at 10am at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 17502 Horsehead Road, Brandywine, MD 20613 with Reverend Martin Flum officiating. Interment will be on Monday, July 8th at 11am at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623.
