Navy Research Lab to hold info session on well water sampling

CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. - Residents in the vicinity of U.S. Naval Research Laboratory – Chesapeake Bay Detachment (NRL-CBD) and other interested parties are invited to attend a public information meeting to learn about the Navy’s offer to test drinking water from wells within designated areas near the installation with potential impacts from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The Navy has developed a protective policy to assess certain PFAS on and in the vicinity of installations which have known or potential releases of these compounds into the environment; these are compounds frequently found in fire-fighting foam (aqueous film forming foam (AFFF)) and various industrial and consumer products.

The meeting format will include drinking water and environmental restoration informational displays along with representatives from the Navy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Department of Health – Calvert County, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

Residents are encouraged to attend on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Northeast Community Center, 4075 Gordon Stinnett Avenue, Chesapeake Beach, MD 20732.

For additional information regarding the meeting and the Navy’s PFAS policy, you may visit the public web site at https://go.usa.gov/xQFuw/ and www.secnav.navy.mil/eie/pages/pfc-pfas.aspx.
