Commissioners talk road improvements in Charles County

LA PLATA, Md. - At the meeting on Tuesday, July 10, county staff presented an assessment for Turkey Hill Road to the Board of Commissioners, based on a review conducted by the Traffic Safety Committee. Staff shared recommendations for improvements to be made, including reconstruction of the road from Route MD 227 to Route US 301, and realignment of a sharp 90-degree bend from south of Skylark Drive to Spalding Drive. These improvements would address causes of major accidents on the road over the past 25 years. Based on the county staff and the committee chairperson’s request, Commissioners authorized the allocation of funds to complete a safety improvement and alignment study. The results of the study will be used to determine the specific roadway improvements, the scope of the formal design, and construction project to follow.

Open Session Briefings

  • Chuck Bean, executive director of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG), presented the organization’s annual report. MWCOG brings together local government leaders to make connections, share information, and develop solutions to major challenges. Charles County residents benefit from a variety of initiatives sponsored by the organization, including grants and programs that support transportation initiatives, emergency communications and planning, and cooperative procurements for local and state governments throughout the Washington metropolitan region.
  • Commissioners received recommendations from the Charles County Compensation Commission regarding salaries for elected Judges of the Orphans’ Court, elected County Commissioners, and four appointed boards, including the Board of Appeals, Board of Electrical Examiners, Board of License Commissioners, and the Planning Commission. The recommendations included small, annual increases to salaries for the elected judges, which were approved by the General Assembly earlier this year. It also included nominal increases for appointed members of the four boards, and a 2 percent increase annually for elected Commissioners. The Commissioners will vote to introduce legislation concerning the recommendations on July 24. View the complete report in BoardDocs.
