Structure fire reported in St. Mary's

Avenue, MD - A fiberglass boat that had apparently been abandoned in a wooded area of St. Mary's County was deliberately set on fire Monday, July 17, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, a passerby discovered the blaze at approximately 6:47 p.m. at Hatchet Thicket Road and Collin Road in Avenue.

"The boat/brush pile was on private property when a passerby discovered the fire," a deputy fire marshal stated. "We were unable to determine any identifying marks for registration nor make or model of the boat."

Five firefighters brought the blaze under control in 10 minutes. No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $400.

Avenue, MD - On Monday evening, July 17 at approximately 6 p.m. firefighters and police were dispatched to a fire in a wooded area off Coltons Point Road near Hatchet Thicket Road. A structure, reportedly a boat, was discovered on fire. The blaze was extinguished. No injuries were reported.

The incident is under investigation and a report is pending.
