Van Hollen Statement on Historic Health Care Reform

  • By

Tuesday, July 14, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the American Affordable Health Choices Act:

“The American Affordable Health Choices Act has been over half a century in the making.  This legislation, introduced today by the House Committees on Education and Labor, Energy and Commerce, and Ways and Means, marks a historic moment in our nation.  For far too long, the status quo of high costs and millions of uninsured Americans have left us with a system that must be reformed.  We will keep what works, fix what doesn’t, and in the end provide quality, affordable health care for all Americans that will be fully paid for.

“If you like your doctor and your plan, you can keep them.  If you want to change doctors or plans, you will be able to.  You will no longer be penalized for pre-existing conditions, and you won’t lose your insurance if you lose your job.  And for the 46 million Americans who don’t have health insurance, you will no longer have to worry about the next time you or your child gets sick because you will finally have access to health care.

“Our critics will try to scare you, and will fight to keep the status quo because many are beholden to the special interests that profit from a broken system that has led to skyrocketing costs and premiums.  Make no mistake – reforming our health care system is crucial to getting our economy back on track and getting our deficit under control.  Every single insured family currently pays more than $1,100 a year in hidden taxes to cover the costs for the millions who are uninsured.  That hidden tax will only increase if we fail to act.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues on this historic legislation, and I hope my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will work with us to improve the lives of all American families and enact meaningful health care reform.”
